George W. Sherman, 95, of Bellevue passed away on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at his home.
 
He was born January 11, 1922 in Lyme Twp, Bellevue, Ohio to David and Hilda (Poths) Sherman.  He resided on Sandhill Road his entire life.  He attended Lyme School and graduated from Bellevue High School in 1940.  He was a self-employed farmer until 1977 and a Nationwide Insurance Agent from 1962 until his retirement July 30, 1985.
 
He was a member of the following organizations: St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Bellevue; 70-year member and Past Master of Roby Lodge #534 F & AM, Monroeville; 70-year member and Past Patron of Althea Chapter #438 Order of the Eastern Star; President of the Monroeville Masonic Temple Board; 32nd Degree Scottish Rite, Valley of Toledo; Past President of Firelands' Scottish Rite Association; Zenobia Temple Shrine, Toledo; Past President of Firelands' Shrine Club; Hospital Chairman for Firelands' Shrine Club since 1984; Master of Lyme Grange #2027 in 1958 and treasurer for 40 years; Ohio State Grange and National Grange; Bellevue Alumni Association Board; Life Member of Bellevue Elks # 1013; Huron County Farm Bureau and served on the state policy development committee and was Congressional Spokesman for the 13th Congressional District, Washington DC.  He was on the Huron County Fair Board for over 20 years and a honorary member; Lyme Lighters Farm Bureau Council.
 
On March 22, 1997 he received the "Distinguished Service Award" from the Bellevue Area Chamber of Commerce.  On June 8, 1996 he was given the Meritorious Service Award from the Scottish Rite Valley of Toledo; in 2000 he was named "Noble of the Year"  by George Seney Illustrious Potentate Zenobia Temple; April 30, 2005 he was presented the Grand Masters Community Service Award from Grand Master Jim S. Deyo at the 16th Masonic District Grand Master Reception; September 8, 2011 he received the "Thomas W. Melham Humanitarian Award" of the Great Lakes Shrine Assoc through Zenobia Temple, Toledo.  From 1988 until 2007 he and his wife hosted the Ron Wheland Memorial Picnic for the Firelands Shrine Club Kids and their families who had been to a Shriners Hospital. 
 
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Mary (Porter) Sherman, whom he married July 15, 1944.  Daughters: Susan (Charles) Parks; Joyce (Donald) Krupp; Pamela (Stanley) Smith, all of Bellevue; Georgia (William) Orwig of Castalia; grandchildren: George (Kathryn) Parks, Bellevue; Charlie (Julie) Parks, Bellevue; Kevin (Andrea) Krupp, Bellevue; Casey (Danyell) Smith, Clyde; Bridget (Don) Morrow, Vermillion; Tiffany (Mitchell) Harris, Pinehurst, NC; Kristin (Mitch) Ayers, Fayetteville, GA; Samantha (Evan) Bils, Upper Sandusky; Kendra (Devon) Snook, Huron; 19 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Kenton Sherman of Bellevue.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents: David on Nov. 24, 1955 and Hilda (Poths) Sherman on May 27, 1971; three sisters, Lucille at age 4, Iverna Phillips of Zanesville, and Florence Sprang of Mansfield.
 
Calling hours will be 3:00-7:00pm Sunday, September 10, 2017 at Auxter Funeral Home, 1105 Castalia St, Bellevue with Eastern Star services at 7:00pm, followed by Masonic Services.  His funeral service will be 2:30pm Monday, September 11 at Auxter Funeral Home with Fr. Aaron Gerlach officiating.  Burial will follow in Bellevue City Cemetery.
 
Memorials may be given to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 285 W. Main St, Bellevue OR Shriner's Hospitals, c/o Zenobia Shrine, 8048 Broadstone Blvd, Perrysburg, Ohio 43551.
