Dear Pat,
I just learned of Ron's passing. I worked with Ron at BGSU FIrelands as an adjunct chemistry and physics faculty. His high academic standards and educational advice were very helpful to me. May God comfort you and your family.

With sincerest condolences,
Linda Cornell

I was sent to BGSU and Dr. Olsen's Chemistry program by my Sandusky High School Chemistry Teacher, Benoit Schneider. Boy am I glad I took his advice! Backing up a bit, I was one of those Sixth Grade Kids who had a Chemistry Set in his bedroom he got one Christmas. And when other kids lost interest in their newly acquired chemistry sets, I could then trade other things with them to replenish the chemicals that I was always running out of. By Eighth Grade, the basement at 210 Shelby Street Sandusky was so full of chemicals and apparatus, looking back it would have been a Fire Marshall's Nightmare. And I wound up... No, not a Chemical Engineer, but instead a Registered Nurse. I've been in practice for over thirty three years now.
Dr. Olsen made you see the Chemistry, for yourself. And he would see you through to the other side when you were puzzled: Be patient and do that with a young kid like me. I was only seventeen when I enrolled. (No, not a Brain, just one of those "September" born kids so you merely end up graduating young.) And he was the one who actually helped me with the paperwork when I enrolled at Firelands... I can still remember the day I drove my Dad's 1969 Chevrolet Kingswood Station wagon over to Firelands and met with him. You know, I work at OSU now, but back then, Firelands looked so big to me. And I wasn't sure that I could cut it, academically. I was so nervous and intimated when I walked into that building. A lot of us have him to Thank for launching our careers. I saw his retirement announcement listed in The Falcon, and I regret not visiting with him. I'm sure one of the subjects (besides beer!) I would have asked him about is which oil is better for the car- Synthetic or just plain SAE oil!
Time and people pass quickly. So does the time to Thank them.

Sincerely,

William Pietschman, B.S.N., R.N.

Pat,
It is with sadness that I read the notice from Firelands College, that Ron is no longer with us. We spent so many times together, working diligently to raise science academic standards at Firelands College so that our students would be well received in business and industry, or went on to the last two years of physical science at the main campus or other full university.
And the challenges of changing administrative structure and transient administrators. Alas, such is the challenge for pioneers!

Happy memories of Dr. Olsen continue to be with you. But when sadness comes, may these promises from the Scriptures bring solace and strength to help you to endure. Jehovah God is close to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit. And he will wipe away the tears from all faces. Psalms 34:18; Isaiah 25:8 NWT. And in the future, mankind will not suffer illness ever again. No resident will say: " I am sick." Isaiah 33:24; Psalms 37:11, 29 NWT. Peace be with you, dear family.
