Beth Long Obituary

The prayers of our beloved Nana, Beth Ann Long, were answered on Friday, October 25, 2019. Beth passed away peacefully at the Willows Nursing home in Bellevue, Ohio. She was 93 years old.

She was born on January 12, 1926 in Bellevue, Ohio to Carl F.J. & Martha P. (Gardner) Hankammer. Beth graduated from Bellevue High School in 1943 and Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in Cleveland, Ohio in 1947. She served in the Cadet Nurse Corps as a student nurse. Beth worked as a labor and delivery nurse in Los Angeles, CA and Honolulu, Hawaii. There she met her future husband William M. Long, a navy sailor and were married on June 20, 1948.

Most of Beth’s nursing career was spent as a registered nurse in the Obstetrics unit at Bellevue Hospital.  She joyfully assisted in the births of many babies born at Bellevue Hospital. Following her retirement both Beth and Bill traveled throughout the country in their Airstream trailer visiting friends, family, and grandchildren. Beth’s last years were spent at the Willows in Bellevue where she received heartfelt kindness and excellent nursing care.

Beth’s family will remember her many talents including sewing, pine needle basketry, and knitting. Her kindness was felt by many, including the recipients of her 1,394 knitted items donated to those in need. There was no craft project or hobby that she did not master.

She was a member of the Victorian Guild at Lyme Village, the Ye Olde Stone Mill Antique Club and lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bellevue.

Beth was preceded in death by her husband William and her sisters Eleanor Groman and Marian Compton.  Survivors include their children:  Lani (Robert) Shannon of Grafton, Ohio; Michael (Marilyn) Long of Fort Pierre, South Dakota; Becky (Tom) Cresswell of Spokane, Washington; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Joining five generations of ancestors, Beth will be buried in the Bellevue Cemetery next to her husband. Private family graveside services will be held.  Auxter Funeral Home & Cremation Service is assisting the family with arrangements.  Online condolences may be shared at www.auxterfuneralhomes.com
