George Pickett Obituary

George Benfer Pickett, 100, formerly of Clyde, OH, passed away January 31, 2024 at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky, OH.

He was born on December 4, 1923 in Clyde, OH, to Mattie McKinley (Gail) Pickett and Royce McPherson Pickett. He was raised in Clyde, graduating from Clyde High School in 1941. He attended Ohio State University from 1941 to 1942.

He enlisted in the Navy in 1942, receiving basic training at Great Lakes Naval Training Station in Illinois. He received further training as an Aviation Machinist Mate at Navy Pier in Chicago. He then joined Crew 10 of sea-plane Patrol Bombing Squadron 20 at Alameda, CA, which was training for action over the Pacific Ocean. He eventually flew 50 missions, in a PBM-3 Mariner sea plane, over the Philippine Islands and Borneo as a flight engineer and tail turret gunner. He earned the designation of a “Qualified Combat Aircrewman.” He rose to the rank of Aviation Machinist Mate First Class, and he was awarded the following medals: Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal and Gold Star in lieu of a second medal, American Theater Campaign, and Asiatic Pacific Campaign, Navy Unit Commendation, Philippine Liberation. He enjoyed attending several crew-member reunions.

After an receiving an Honorable Discharge from the Navy, he attended Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture, in 1948. He married Anne Bell Leidy at Clyde St. Mary Church on June 25, 1949. They had one son, Mark, and one daughter, Judith.

He was the proprietor of the Clyde Nursery and Landscape Company, where he managed the family business until 1972. He then returned to Ohio State University to earn credits for a teaching license. He taught horticulture and landscape design at Vanguard Vocational High School (Fremont) for 5 years. He then practiced as a private landscape designer for several years.

He was active in the Knights of Columbus and the choir at Clyde St. Mary Church. He and his wife Anne were active in many church activities, such as the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, and in jail ministry at the Sandusky County jail. He helped several inmates earn their GED.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, his brother, James M Pickett, his sister, Alice Gail (Pickett) Wolfe and his wife, Anne (2008). He is survived by his children, Mark (Linda) Pickett, Fremont, OH; and Judith (Dale) Lounsbury, Eugene, OR; grandchildren, Christopher (Joannah) Pickett, San Antonio, TX; Benjamin (Cassandra) Pickett, Sylvania, OH; Maryanne (Brandon) Howard, San Diego, CA; Lydia and Collin Lounsbury, Eugene, OR, great grandchildren, Jonathan and Lucille Pickett, San Antonio, TX; Owen, William and Wyatt Pickett, Sylvania, OH.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 from 9:30 am until the funeral mass at 10:30 am at the St. Mary Catholic Church, Vine Street, Clyde. Burial, with military rites, will be held at St. Mary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Clyde, St. Mary Church.
