Helen A. Gurney, 83, of Clyde, unexpectedly died at The Bellevue Hospital on Sunday, October 15, 2023.
Helen was born in Sandusky County on December 24, 1939 to the now deceased Victoria (Haubert) and Charles F. Schoch.
She was a 1957 graduate of St. Joseph High School in Fremont. Also, she was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Clyde.
Mrs. Gurney enjoyed traveling, including bus trips, visiting the casinos, playing cards and attending events at both the Clyde and Fremont Senior Centers. Her family was her prime enjoyment and point of interest.
For many years, she was employed at the former Clyde Saving Bank, prior to her retirement.
On February 10, 1979, she married Jack Gurney, Sr. He preceded her in death on February 17, 2021.
Survivors include three children, Charles “Charlie” (Kathleen) Hermes of Clyde; Susan Hermes of Fremont and Timothy Hermes of Clyde. Three step-children, Jake (Becky) Gurney of Michigan; John Gurney (Amy) and Heidi (Mark) Smith all of Clyde. Twenty grandchildren and ten great grandchildren also survive. Her brother, Jerry (Jeanne) Schoch and sister-in-law, Pat Schoch survive in Fremont.
Helen was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathleen Hermes on February 7, 2014; her granddaughter, Taylor Norman in 2013 and her brother Rollin Schoch.
Visitation will be on Thursday, October 19, 2023 from 2:00 – 7:00 pm at Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, 218 South Main St., Clyde, Ohio. The funeral mass will be on Friday, October 20, 2023 at 10:30 am at St. Mary Catholic Church, Clyde. Burial will be in Farewell Retreat Cemetery, Republic.
